The Journal of Gender Studies welcomes articles, short pieces, letters and news items. Contributors are asked to write in a clear, jargon-free style. Full-length articles should make explicit the concept of gender or theoretical perspective being used as well as the contribution of the paper to existing research and theoretical debates on gender. Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary area drawing on a range of academic disciplines and perspectives. Papers with a specific disciplinary perspective should make the content and argument accessible to those outside the discipline and recognise the cross-disciplinary nature of gender studies.

Articles should be between 5000 and 7000 words in length; where a longer article is justified, an exception may be made. All submissions should be clearly word-processed and should not currently be under consideration by any other journals. Send one electronic copy and one identical paper copy (A4 size). Do not staple or bind the pages together. Please type on one side of the paper only, leave ample margins and do not justify the right-hand margin. Use double spacing throughout, including quotations, references and notes.

In addition, a separate title/cover page should include the author's name, address for correspondence, telephone number, email address if possible, and a total word count including abstract, title, headings, references and notes, tables and illustrations (see below). The first page of the article should include the title again, but not the author's name (papers are sent to referees without the author's name). Pages must be numbered consecutively throughout, excluding the title/cover page. On one separate sheet, please provide an abstract of the article, not exceeding 200 words, followed by six keywords, and on another sheet give brief biographical details. UK or US English spelling is acceptable as long there is consistency within the article. Where quoting from a source use the spelling in the original. For guidance on references, see below.

* Formatting guide
* Reference style information: style, quickref

Any consistent spelling style is acceptable. Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.
This journal requires a short paragraph of bibliographical details for all contributors.
A Word template is available for this journal.
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk

Final, revised versions of papers should be submitted on disk, on paper and by email. The paper copy must exactly match the electronic versions. Separate guidelines for preparing manuscripts electronically are available from the website, under Electronic Submissions.

Articles which do not meet these requirements and the style and format detailed in the following sections may be returned to the author for alteration before they are considered.

Forum welcomes shorter pieces of writing and is open to a wide variety of forms. Submissions should be approximately 1500 words in length, though slightly longer pieces will be considered. The writing may focus on a sense of engagement through interviews, jointly written pieces arguing opposing views, or responses to earlier articles. It may be questioning in discussing the problems and potential of work in progress or committed in the form of a position piece on a topical issue. It may be the personal voice of creative writing or a reflection on a transforming text or event in the field of gender or impersonal in the presentation of data useful to researchers in that field. Forum is a public space for lively and diverse voices.

Book reviews may vary in length from 300 words for a single-title review to 1,500 words for a substantial review article. Guidelines for reviewers are sent with books for review.
