The cultural question is among the most important yet difficult subjects facing inter-Asia today. Throughout the 20th century, worldwide competition over capital, colonial history, and the Cold War has jeopardized interactions among cultures. Globalization of technology, regionalization of economy and the end of the Cold War have opened up a unique opportunity for cultural exchanges to take place. In response to global cultural changes, cultural studies has emerged internationally as an energetic field of scholarship.
Inter-Asia Cultural Studies gives a long overdue voice, throughout the global intellectual community, to those concerned with inter-Asia processes. Inter-Asia Cultural Studies includes discussion, reports and analysis from global critical circles, and especially from marginalised sites, with the aim of enhancing the communication and exchange between inter-Asia and other regions of the cultural studies world.
Inter-Asia Cultural Studies:
- provides a forum for scholars working in cultural studies in Asia
- responds to the re-centering of cultural studies outside the Anglo-American axis and participates in cultural politics at a local level, but with an international agenda
- constructs a “critical inter-Asia subjectivity”, drawing on local critical intellectual traditions while making global links with other cultural studies networks
- problematizes “Asia” in the context of Asia's post-war economic and cultural resurgence and its troubled history as colonised and coloniser
- links cultural studies practices to the new social and cultural movements.
