This special issue of Women & Performance looks at two critical approaches that are often seen at odds. Psychoanalytic theory in its strictest articulations has little use for the category of affect and affect studies is often articulated as a critique of traditional psychoanalytic approaches to cultural analysis. This issue brings together scholars firmly located within both camps and some who shuttle between critical paradigms to perform a critical theory that is “between” psychoanalysis and affect studies.
