Action research in health and social care is increasingly gaining in popularity. At the Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN) conference in Spain in 2004, the Editors announced their intention to strengthen the journal's existing engagement with the important field of health and social care and to work towards increasing the numbers of articles it publishes in this area. This Special Issue put together by Julienne Meyer and Carol Munn-Giddings, the two editors with a special interest in these fields, is an important marker of this new direction for the journal.
