The Russian incursion surprised many Western analysts. In the years following Putin's ascent to power in Moscow in 2000 it appeared as though relations with the West were improving and Russian foreign policy appeared increasingly pragmatic. The Georgian invasion however has given vent to a wide-ranging discussion of the nature and strategy of Russia in the twenty-first century.
The purpose of this special issue of Small Wars & Insurgencies is to examine the debate this has produced in strategic studies, media studies and international relations. For readers of this journal the invasion and resulting short military conflict is a good example of the wide-ranging international ramifications of small wars in contemporary politics.
