In the period since the disintegration of the ‘Eastern Bloc’ and the wars in the former Yugoslavia, a large number of visual art exhibitions, conferences, events and publications have been organised around the theme of the Balkans that characterise a ‘rediscovery’ of the Balkan Peninsula by the ‘West’. With an introduction from Louisa Avgita and Juliet Steyn, this issue of Third Text brings together critical approaches to the ‘idea of the Balkans’ as manifested in these visual art events.
