This special issue is in two sections. The first reports the outcomes of the recent International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) members' workshop. The second part includes three extended articles on issues relating to quality in different fields of higher education. Two of these investigate academic views and awareness of quality at sub-institutional level. A third paper investigates the need for an evaluation of the quality of competence-based assessment.
