This Special Issue devoted to Latin America re-examines the challenges of providing moral education in contexts of extreme poverty, social and economic inequality, violence and, in many countries, a long history of authoritarianism. Indeed, it is the particular context of Latin America and its social life, as well as the different forms that struggles for justice, inclusion and democracy have taken in various countries, that form the backdrop to contemporary moral educational endeavours.
This Special Issue examines issues in, and showcases experiences with, moral and citizenship education in the specific contexts of six countries of the region and offers some critical evaluation of difficulties and challenges encountered. It is hoped that this Special Issue can make a new contribution and raise awareness of the particular needs of and issues faced in this southern region, so that the challenges they set for the field of moral education and development can be more centrally included in professional academic dialogue.
