The collection of essays in this Special Issue embodies an aspiration for an integrated, multi-level model of moral functioning. The occasion is observance of the 50th anniversary of Lawrence Kohlberg’s (1958) University of Chicago dissertation, however, this Special Issue is not a commemorative look back at Kohlberg’s work, rather a prospective look forward. In the field of moral development and education, which Kohlberg’s dissertation so profoundly influenced, what are the prospects now for moving forward from his life’s work toward a more comprehensive account of moral functioning?
