Indonesia and the Malay World
Special Issue: Volume 34, Issue 100, 2006
This issue celebrates the 100th issue of the journal as well as the contribution of Nigel Phillips.
The journal became Indonesia and the Malay World only in 1997, 24 years after its foundation. Its predecessor the Indonesia Circle Newsletter was the publication of The Indonesia Circle association which was formed at an inaugural meeting on 12 March 1973 at SOAS. Nigel Phillips was in at the beginning, and he became the first Treasurer.
The first issue was published in July 1973 and it continued to appear three times a year. Over the years this Newsletter proved to fill a niche and in March 1977 it was transformed into the Indonesia Circle journal, which continued until 1997.
Nigel stayed with the journal loyally and played a pivotal role in acting as the main institutional and academic point of contact for the journal throughout most of its life.In appreciation for his exceptional service the Editorial Board of Indonesia and the Malay World has made him Honorary Editor of the journal, and resolved that the 100th issue (November 2006) be dedicated to him.
