Aims & Scope

The Journal of Transatlantic Studies is multi- and inter-disciplinary, embracing:

  • History, International Relations and Security Studies
  • Literature and Culture
  • Comparative Politics and Constitutionalism
  • Economic and Business History, Planning, and the Environment
  • Area Studies, Transmission of Ideas and Migration

Standard issues attempt to strike a balance between the disciplines, though History, IR and Security Studies articles tend to predominate. Themed issues are also published. In the past, these have been on the impact of 9/11, on the Anglo-American relationship and on NATO's contemporary challenges. In the future, themed issues are planned on Canada and transatlantic relations, on perspectives from East and Central Europe from a literary and cultural perspective, and on the US Secretaries of State.

Broadly speaking the journal will contain articles on the topic of Europe and its interactions with North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean. (The definition of Europe includes Russia and editorial policy would be suitably flexible about the African margin, depending on content and quality of submissions.) While the majority of articles will almost certainly be on North American relations with Europe, there will be an editorial policy of including at least one article per edition dealing with Spanish, or Portuguese or French speaking America (Dutch speaking America/Caribbean will be dealt with on a case by case basis).

It is envisaged that most contributions will be about post 1945 or contemporary affairs, but articles covering any period of transatlantic relations would be welcomed providing that they have some contemporary resonance.
