Routledge at the Index Freedom of Expression Awards

Jo Glanville, Editor of Index on Censorship

Since 2005, Index on Censorship, the only magazine dedicated to protecting and promoting free speech, has been published by Routledge. Founded in 1972, in the past 35 years it has published an extraordinary range of opinion, analysis, comment and reportage from all corners of the world.

This year saw the 7th Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Awards. This annual event honours people who have made courageous and outstanding contributions in the defence of freedom of expression. With a humbling array of nominees, awards are given in the following categories: journalism; making films and writing books; law and campaigning; whistleblowing.

The event was held at LSO St Luke's, London, on 14 March. The evening was presented by Anna Ford.

The keynote speech was given by Jung Chang, bestselling author of Mao: The Untold Story and Wild Swans.

The event had a large audience and was attended by a variety of people.

Siphiwe Hlophe (winner of the Law & Campaigning Award, for her work fighting against gender discrimination for HIV/AIDs victims in Swaziland) with David Blunkett.

In the company of celebrity auctioneer, Bob Marshall Andrews, a charity auction was held at the end of the evening. A must for rugby fans - Routledge donated a private box for four people to watch London Irish play Worcester Warriers

Routledge were delighted to attend the event with several of their other journal editors.
