IV. For Assistance Computing Effect Sizes

1. Basic Effect Size Guide with SPSS and SAS Syntax. This guide was prepared to lead authors through the steps required to compute Pearson's r or Cohen's d from raw data or from the output of statistical tests. The computational steps are illustrated with SPSS and SAS syntax commands. The Guide is currently being expanded so check back for a revised version in the future.

2. David Wilson created an Excel program for converting a wide range of statistical data into Pearson's r or Cohen's d. The program can be downloaded directly as a compressed zip file or by scrolling to the link at the bottom of his meta-analysis web page. Despite what the note on the web page suggests, the software creates both d and r.

3. Michael Furr's web site provides two potentially useful PDF files. The first offers an overview of effect size formulas and the second provides help for computing and interpreting the effect sizes associated with planned contrasts in an ANOVA design.
