Local Environment is an international refereed journal which focuses on
local environmental and sustainability policy, politics and action. It is a
forum for the examination, evaluation and discussion of the environmental,
social and economic policies and strategies which will be needed in the
move towards sustainable development at local, national and global levels. Local Environment is written by and for academics and practitioners. It is
a central purpose of the journal to develop an understanding of local
sustainability based both on critical research and practical experience.
Local Environment is associated with the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). They work together to evaluate and
present the methods and tools necessary to achieve local sustainable
development worldwide. The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is the international environmental agency for local governments. Established
in 1990, ICLEI's mission is to build and support a worldwide movement of
local governments to achieve and monitor tangible improvements in global
environmental conditions through cumulative local actions. ICLEI operates
as an international association whose members currently number more than
275 cities, towns, counties, and their associations around the world.
Local Environment is one of the resources provided by the Council to its
