Journal of African Cultural Studies has evolved out of African Languages and Cultures which was founded in the Department of the Languages and Cultures of Africa at SOAS, University of London, UK. Previously concerned with the broad fields of African linguistic and cultural studies, the relaunched journal will have a wider scope.

As from January 1998, Journal of African Cultural Studies will focus on dimensions of African culture including literature (particularly African language literatures), performance, art, music, the role of the media, the relationship between culture and power, etc. as well as issues within fields such as popular culture in Africa, sociolinguistic topics of cultural interest, and culture and gender. It will no longer carry articles which deal with the technical linguistic descriptions of African languages.
