Emergences: Journal for the Study of Media and Composite Cultures seeks to explore the interstitial sites of phenomena as reflected in the increasing complexity of life and thought in this epoch. The journal began in the late 1980s and has continued to expand its scope to address issues of contemporary import to the study of reconstituted identities and (re)formation of what we have termed composite cultures. Issues addressed by the journal include: composite interfaces--the global/local and translation/interpretation; positionings and hyphenated cultures; redefinitions of the notion/nature of community; the impact of mediated images on the increasing flux of life. The increasing complexity of cultural interactions, prompted by the emergence of composite cultures in these times, calls for re-thinking our modes of interaction, and for creative ways to relate histories and memories. Emergences: Journal for the Study of Media and Composite Cultures will be a forum for explaining and resolving these issues and new ones that arise in our changing world. The journal is committed to interdisciplinary approaches and more nuanced examinations of contemporary mediated cultures. It seeks to publish international material that comments on questions of ‘communities’ and ‘modernities’ in ways that prompt a re-examination of received paradigms, and ask such questions as: How can we tell stories where histories and memory interact? What might be the contours of a heterogeneous logic? Where are the pressure points of normalizing power and hierarchies? New to Carfax in 1999
