INTERNATIONAL EDITORIAL BOARD

Published for the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE).

European Journal of Intercultural Studies has been published since 1993 by the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE).

The IAIE was founded in 1984. It is a network of educational professionals, which aims at the development and implementation of intercultural education. This includes issues of:

  • intercultural and international understanding
  • the recognition of and respect for cultural differences
  • issues of human rights and citizenship
  • the provision of equal opportunities (the educational system should be inclusive)
  • strategies for equal access to knowledge and the learning processes in order to achieve an equality of outcomes.

Intercultural education is characterized by:

  • clear policy guidelines for schools
  • recognition of the value of the knowledge, skills and contributions of all students to the learning process
  • criteria for a broadly based and accessible curriculum
  • criteria for optimum interaction processes in the classroom
  • multilingualism

An important aim of the journal is to clarify terminology, concepts, and theory of education in plural societies, and to provide colleagues with knowledge and information in order to contribute to the critical analysis and the implementation of intercultural education. Topics which are covered include: terminological issues, pluralism in a democratic framework, pluralism in post-communist and in post-colonial countries, migration and indigenous minority issues, refugees issues, language policy issues, xenophobia, equity issues, curriculum and classroom organisation (eg cooperative learning strategies), educational policies. The journal also includes IAIE News, information about the activities of the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO, and information about international events which are of interest for IAIE members.
