Economic Analysis presents original research in economics covering the themes of alternative forms of enterprise and employee participation. The journal reflects the increasing recognition that the participation of a wide range of stakeholders in the management and ownership of organisations can have a profound effect on business performance, and that economic behaviour and business performance cannot be fully understood without an appreciation of the social and economics networks which are embedded within organisations, and which tie organisations together in an institutional framework. Interest in these issues has been stimulated by a variety of recent developments including the Action Programme to implement the EU Social Charter (which includes clauses on employee participation in decisions, and in profits and equity of the employing enterprise), as well as the growth of Employee Share Ownership Plans (ESOPs) in he USA, the widespread use of employee buyouts as a privatisation method in central and eastern Europe and Russia. It also reflects the promotion of business networking as a policy tool for economic development based on cooperation as well as competition, and the emergence in many countries of private enterprises in the provision of welfare services which are characterised by the participation of consumers, users, workers and volunteers.
Economic Analysis carries papers relating to three main spheres:
a) employee participation in business organisations, encompassing employee ownership, profit sharing, cooperatives, ESOPs, co-determination, workers councils and non-hierarchical modes of organisation
b) the social enterprise in the provision of welfare services, encompassing all types of voluntary and non-profit organisations and social cooperatives
c) inter-firm cooperation, encompassing industrial districts and collaborative networking between small and medium sized enterprises
Economic Analysis also carries a Survey Section containing articles relating to thematic areas and important policy issues which provide an overview and a critical evaluation of the area or policy issue for the benefit of both specialists and non-specialists in the field. Also featured are review articles providing extended analytical reviews of books of particular significance and shorter reviews of books and reports contributing to the main areas covered by the Journal. The International Association for the Economics of Participation (IAFEP) Economic Analysis is the Journal of IAFEP, an international association of scholars engaged in research and teaching on the economics of participation. The Association was originally founded in Dubrovnik in 1978 as the International Association for the Economics of Self-Management. The Associations journal Economic Analysis and Workers Management was the precursor of the present journal. It was edited by Professor Branko Horvat until publication was suspended in 1991. In August 1994 at a conference held in Portoroz in Slovenia the Association changed its name into the International Association for the Economics of Participation. The most recent conference of IAFEP was held in Prague in August 1996, while the next conference will be held from June 26th-28th June 1998, at the University of Bristol.
