Instructions for AuthorsInstructions for Authors: Statement of Purpose Equity & Excellence in Education publishes articles based on scholarly research utilizing qualitative or quantitative methods, as well as essays that describe and assess practical efforts to achieve educational equity and are contextualized within an appropriate literature review. We consider manuscripts on a range of topics related to equity, equality and social justice in K-12 or postsecondary schooling, and that focus upon social justice issues in school systems, individual schools, classrooms, and/or the social justice factors that contribute to inequality in learning for students from diverse social group backgrounds. There have been and will continue to be many social justice efforts to transform educational systems as well as interpersonal interactions at all levels of schooling. Some are successful while others fall short of their goals. This journal provides a record of those important experiments and ventures, and we welcome suggestions for special issues or sections. Specifications for Submissions To submit a manuscript, please send 3 typed copies and an electronic disk with the manuscript saved as a Word document or in Rich Text Format (if you use a MAC). Include a separate title page with identifying information: your name, address, telephone number, institutional affiliation, fax number, and your e-mail address (by which we will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript). The first page of each copy of your manuscript should include your article's title and abstract, but no personally identifying information that might influence external peer reviewers. We are aiming to publish articles of approximately 7700 words, including all references and appendices, with as many as 2 tables and/or figures. Please confine submissions accordingly. Authors should follow the 5th edition of the American Psychological Association Publication Manual guidelines for citations, references, organization, and ethics. Refer to these guidelines to eliminate bias based on gender, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic group, disability, or age. In accordance with standard practice, we expect that manuscripts submitted to Equity & Excellence in Education are original, have not been published elsewhere, and are not under review at any other journal. Social Groups and Language We recognize that social identities and their accompanying names are constantly evolving and changing within historical and geographical contexts. We also believe that every group has a right to name itself, and accordingly we honor an author's preferred self-identification. We regard the following as acceptable or interchangeable: African American or Black, Indian or Native American, Latino or Hispanic, Asian or Asian American, White or European. We also recognize that certain terms are considered pejorative, and authors should consult the APA Publications Manual 5th edition for guidance about language bias and sensitivity. In manuscript submissions, we prefer that specific ethnicities are capitalized but not hyphenated. Racial designations such as Black and White are capitalized only when used as proper nouns, but not when used as adjectives (e.g. black communities, white teachers). External Peer Review Process Receipt of submissions is acknowledged by email. After preliminary evaluation by the editorial staff, manuscripts that we consider appropriate for this journal are sent to external peer reviewers. The outside reviews, along with editorial staff reviews, provide the basis for acceptance, although editorial decisions are not bound by external reviews. Revised work is generally reviewed in-house. We make every effort to assist authors in strengthening their work, whether or not it is ultimately published in this journal. Equity & Excellence in Education, |
