Instructions for Authors

The instructions below are specifically directed at authors that wish to submit a manuscript to Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy. For general information, please visit the Publish With Us section of our website.

Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.

Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy welcomes papers in the following categories.

a) Research papers falling under two categories:

  • Reports from research studies including qualitative and quantitative methods, and a combination of the two. 
  • Discussions of research methodologies relevant to dance movement and body psychotherapy.
  • Each research paper should include an introduction, methodology, findings/results, discussion and conclusions/recommendations.

b) Clinical practice section dealing with:

  • Thorough descriptions and evaluations of practice
  • Examples of evidence-based practice
  • Discussions of ethical issues
  • Reports from user groups
  • Brief case studies, reports on small-scale pilots, and brief evaluations of clinical work.
  • Descriptions of practice that do not have an innovative character will not be published. Similarly, topics concerned with remediation of body/movement will not be covered in the proposed publication.

c) Theoretical section offering:

  • New insights into phenomena and contributions to the development of the knowledge-base and theory of body/movement therapies.
  • Systematic and critical overview of previous studies and/or relevant literature.
    Papers that repeat existing knowledge-base and/or theory will not be included.

d) Professional issues contributions should address:

  • Professional activities such as state registration, training and professional development.
  • Common ground and differences between dance movement and body therapies.

e) Book reviews from the fields of body psychotherapy, dance movement therapy and relevant others from health and counselling/psychotherapy. Please contact the editor if you would like to review a book. All reviews are refereed in the usual way.

f) Reflections and commentaries focussing on personal reflections and commentaries relevant to body, movement and dance therapy.


Manuscript preparation

1. General guidelines
  • Papers are accepted only in English. British English spelling and punctuation is preferred.
  • A typical article will be between 3,000-5,000 words, including abstract and references.  Book reviews will be 1,500 words and Reflections no longer than 2,500 words. Papers that greatly exceed these will be critically reviewed with respect to length. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
  • All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgements; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Abstracts of 100-150 words are required for all papers submitted.
  • Each paper should have three to six keywords.
  • Section headings should be concise.
  • Please supply a short biographical note (50-75 words) for each author.
  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.
  • Manuscripts should be typed on single sides of good quality white A4 or 8 x 11 inch paper, double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (3 cm) margins.

  • Please use British spelling (e.g. colour, organise). Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.
  • This journal requires a short paragraph of bibliographical details for all contributors.

3. Colour


The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

4. Reproduction of copyright material

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor.
This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as email attachments using a standard word processing program. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on disk to the following address:

We welcome new or recent books which are relevant to the focus of the journal and which you consider would be useful to review for readers. Please send relevant titles with publisher details to the address above and we will forward a copy to a reviewer.

Copyright and authors' rights


It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article.
