Instructions to Authors:
Authors submitting a paper do so with the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all authors. The work should not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all articles printed in the journal.

Language and form:
Submitted manuscripts must be written in English. The authors are themselves responsible for ensuring a correct use of the English language. The names and addresses of the authors should appear on the title page only, which is removed before the article is sent to referees. All material, including figure and table legends and references, must be typed double-spaced on one side only of plain white paper, size ISO A4 (210_297mm) or United States letter size (8.5_11 inches). The left margin must be at least 40 mm and the right margins 25 mm.
The left margin may be used for explication (encircled) when necessary. The paper should not exceed 30 pages using a 12-pitch font (including references, excluding abstract, title page and tables/figures). Avoid footnotes and appendices: incorporate them into the text. Use no more than 3 levels of headings, clearly indicating the level of each. Fancy or personal lay-out of submitted manuscripts is not accepted.

Title page and abstract: The title page should contain the title of the article, full names of the authors and their institutional affiliations, key words, a running title not to exceed 60 characters, and the name and complete mailing address (including postal code), e-mail and telephone (and telefax, if any) numbers of the author responsible for correspondence. A separate abstract page should contain an abstract of less than 150 words.

Abbreviations and terminology: Abbreviations should be held to a minimum. Names of groups, impairments, services and organisations should usually not be abbreviated. Authors should not use terminology that some people find offensive (except historical articles which can use the terminology of the period discussed). The journal does not have preferences with regard to current terminological debates, for instance whether “disabled people” is better than “people with disabilities”, nor the proper use of the impairment-disability-distinction. Do however notice that the term handicap is omitted from the WHO terminology. Authors do generally have an obligation to pay attention to terminological debates within social disability research.

Tables and illustrations: Type each table on a separate sheet. The legends for tables and figures should be self-explanatory. Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. Give due attention to the proportions of the printed page. Indicate the approximate location desired in the text.
Illustrations should be professionally drafted and submitted in final form on glossy paper, suitable for reproduction. They must be distinctive enough to allow for substantial reduction in size without loss of clarity, the lettering being reducible to 1.5–2 mm in height. Original drawings and high-quality prints are acceptable.

Electronic copy: When the article is accepted for publication, we will ask for an electronic copy on a diskette or by e-mail. The software used, the program version number, as well as the format of the diskette, should be clearly marked. SJDR prefer a recent version of Microsoft Word.
Graphic elements should be kept as separate files in EPS-, PDF, or TIFF-format. These formats guarantee that the quality of the graphic is good throughout the publishing process if provided with sufficient resolution. Photo illustrations should have at least 300 PPI and please use CMYK colour conversion. Halftones and colour photos should be enclosed separately. If the author wishes to print in black and white, the originals should be black and white to ensure print quality. Glossy photocopies or good quality hard copies are preferred rather than low-resolution electronic files.
Proofs are sent via email as a PDF-file to the first author only. The author(s) must pay the cost of major alterations in the proofs.

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as e-mail attachments using a standard program such as MS Word.
