Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope.
The Journal of Access Services is a one-of-a-kind, peer-reviewed journal which covers the full range of access issues affecting libraries today, including electronic/remote access as well as traditional forms. This quarterly journal is the forum where seasoned access services practitioners share their expertise and hard-earned knowledge about this fundamental concern of librarianship to help their colleagues understand current issues, adapt to current trends, and bring their skills and knowledge to the next level.

An essential guide to the basic business of providing library users with access to information, the Journal of Access Services is a unique resource that helps librarians stay up-to-date on continuing education and professional development in this complex and evolving field. It was the first to examine the policies and conditions that govern the use of library collections, services, and facilities. And as collection management librarians develop new models of providing access to materials as a cost-effective alternative to purchasing them, the journal keeps pace with the evolution of theory and practice in interlibrary loan and document delivery. The journal includes substantive essays, articles, reviews, feature columns, conference reports, and research results that explore the dimensions of this expanding field of librarianship.

Submission of manuscripts.
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Please submit your manuscript in Microsoft Word format electronically to W. Bede Mitchell, wbmitch@georgiasouthern.edu.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.

References. References, citations, and general style of manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 4thed. Cite in the text by author and date (Smith, 1983) and include an alphabetical list at the end of the article. Examples:

  • Journal: Tsai, M., & Wagner, N. N. (1978). Therapy groups for women sexually molested as children. Archives of Sexual Behaviour, 7(6), 417-427.
  • Book: Millman, M. (1980). Such a pretty face. New York: W. W. Norton.
  • Contribution to a Book: Hartley, J. T., & Walsh, D. A. (1980). Contemporary issues in adult development of learning. In L. W. Poon (ed.), Ageing in the 1980s (pp. 239-252). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.

Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color Illustrations. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color.

Tables and Figures. Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.

Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints and Issues. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication. Each corresponding author will receive one copy of the issue in which the article appears and a complimentary PDF. This file is for personal use only and may not be copied and disseminated in any form without prior written permission from Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
