Instructions for Authors
***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages or in the body of a covering email you send to the Editorial Assistant.***
Papers accepted become the copyright of the Journal, unless otherwise specifically agreed.
Contributors should bear in mind that they are addressing an international audience.
Manuscripts that do not conform to the requirements listed below will not be considered for publication and will be returned for revision.
Manuscripts should normally be submitted by email attachment to the Editorial Assistant, Joanne Mulgrew, at effectiveeducation@qub.ac.uk. Exceptionally, a single hard copy may be submitted, along with a CD or memory stick, to: Joanne Mulgrew, Editorial Assistant, Effective Education, School of Education, Queen's University Belfast, Belfast BT7 1HL, UK. Articles should normally be no longer than 6,000 words (including notes and references).
Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution. All pages should be numbered. Footnotes to the text should be avoided. Sponsorship of research reported (e.g. by research councils, government departments and agencies, etc.) should be declared. To allow refereeing, all submissions must be properly formatted for anonymous reviewing. Authors' names and institutions should be typed on a separate sheet and submitted with the manuscript. The full postal and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included on the separate sheet.
Each article should be accompanied by an abstract of 100-150 words on a separate sheet. Abstracts should be accurate summaries including the rationale for the article, methods employed (if relevant in empirical reports) and conclusions drawn.
Contributors will normally receive a decision on their article within 12 weeks of its receipt by the Editor. Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to contributors unless sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent.
Reporting findings. The findings of empirical research and systematic reviews should be reported as comprehensively as possible and in a clear and transparent manner. Contributors should consult the CONSORT Statement for guidance in relation to the reporting of randomized controlled trials. Those reporting the findings of quasi-experimental studies and other research designs should also consult the CONSORT Statement and should include full consideration of the possible biases and limitations of the design used. All empirical studies should include reports of effect sizes and statistical power where possible. Contributors are advised to consult one or more of the following for guidance in relation to the reporting of systematic reviews: the Campbell Collaboration Policy Briefs; the AMSTAR measurement tool; the QUOROM statement; and the EPPI-Centre guidelines for conducting research syntheses.
Non-discriminatory writing. Articles should make no assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader, should contain nothing which might imply that one individual is superior to another on the grounds of race, sex, culture or any other characteristic, and should use inclusive language throughout. Please ensure that writing is free from bias, for instance by replacing 'he' or 'his' by 'he or she' or 's/he' or 'his/her', and by using non-racist language.
Notes: The use of end notes should be avoided wherever possible. Where absolutely essential, they should be numbered 1, 2, 3 consecutively in the manuscript and be denoted by superscripts. They should be typed on a separate sheet of paper at the end of the text.
Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.
Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
