Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope:

The Journal of Radio & Audio Media is a semiannual publication designed to promote scholarly dialogues generated by various disciplinary and methodological points of view. The Journal welcomes interdisciplinary inquiries regarding radio's contemporary and historical subject matter as well as those audio media that have challenged radio's traditional use. Scholars are invited to submit articles pertaining to any area of radio and audio media. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, formats and programming, new technology, policy and regulation, rating systems, commercial and noncommercial networks, radio history, management and innovation, personalities, popular cultures, uses and effects studies, propaganda, social movements, advertising and sales, market concentration, Internet and satellite radio, podcasting, alternative formats, diversity, gender and international radio.

All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymous refereeing by two or more anonymous referees. Submitted work is evaluated according to its conceptualization, importance to radio studies and mass communication theory, contribution to the mass media literature, interest to Journal readers, soundness of research and methodological procedures, and clarity of presentation. Most Journal submissions are 20 to 25 manuscript pages, including references and tables. Special care should be taken with documentation of data and assertions. Opinions should be labeled clearly as such (usually in a “Discussion” section). The reader must be provided with adequate information to judge the scope, content, validity, and reliability of the literature presented.

Authors normally will receive an editorial decision within 3 to 4 months. Because manuscripts are sent to expert referees for evaluation, the consideration time may vary. The Editor reserves the right to make minor changes in any accepted manuscript that do not alter the substantial meaning or results of the article or the expressed views of the author.

Address manuscripts to the Editor: Michael Brown, Editor, Journal of Radio & Audio Media, Communication and Journalism, University of Wyoming, 1000 University, Dept. 3904, Laramie, WY 82071 (phone: 307-766-3122 or 307-766-6277; fax: 307-766-3812; e-mail: mrbrown@uwyo.edu).

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts using Scholar One's Manuscript Central submission Website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hjrs. Any references that might identify the author(s) should be removed from the manuscript. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract. Manuscripts should not exceed 6,500 words.
