Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Mental Health Research in Intellectual Disabilities, the official research journal of NADD, is an interdisciplinary research journal with the purpose of reporting original scientific and scholarly contributions to advance knowledge about mental health issues among persons with intellectual disabilities. The journal will address issues related to the full range of psychopathology among persons with intellectual disabilities (mental retardation), neuro-developmental disorders and autism spectrum disorders, including severe behavior problems, criminality, substance abuse, and genetic phenotypes across the life span. The journal seeks to publish contributions with an emphasis on empirically based research and will include research on characteristics of persons with intellectual and mental health problems; risk and protective factors related to the development and/or prevention of mental health problems in persons with intellectual disabilities; development of screening and diagnostic instruments; effectiveness of behavioral, psychosocial and pharmacological treatment procedures (including group and single subject designs); critical or comparative literature reviews, including quantitative meta-analyses. Occasional conceptual reviews that provide for new understanding of theory or theoretical constructs will also be considered.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be in Microsoft Word or .rtf format, and should be submitted electronically via the online submission system ScholarOne (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/umid). No paper copy is required. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). The instructions given there for preparing tables, figures, references, metrics, and abstracts should be followed. Regular articles are to include an abstract containing a maximum of 150 words. The editor in charge of a manuscript's editorial process is responsible for obtaining reviews and deciding on the disposition of all manuscripts (acceptance, rejection, or requests for revision). The title page should include the name, address, and professional affiliation of all authors. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Six keywords should also be included for indexing purposes.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Peer Review Policy

To the extent possible, Journal of Mental Health Research in Intellectual Disabilities will conduct a blind review process, which means that the author identity will not be revealed to the peer reviewers. Therefore, reviewers will receive manuscripts without the title page. No author names should appear in the manuscript except for the title page.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints

Each corresponding author will receive one copy of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.

Ethical Standards

All investigations using human participants must have been approved by the human subjects review committee of the author's institution.
