Instructions for Authors
Critical Studies in Education
The Journal only accepts for review manuscripts of between 5,000 and 7,000 words that are submitted electronically to the Editor at: criticalstudies@unisa.edu.au
Authors should ensure that their manuscript is in keeping with the Journal's editorial policy statement. Manuscripts submitted should be original, not under review by any other publication and not published elsewhere.
Submissions should be made in two Word documents attached to an email addressed to the Editor at: criticalstudies@unisa.edu.au
Document one should include the manuscript title, institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), the word count of the manuscript (including references and any endnotes), an abstract (150 words maximum), a short bio of each author (50 words each maximum), at least three keywords that reflect the manuscript's content, author contact details (including full postal addresses), and the name of the corresponding author who will check proofs and receive a complimentary copy of the issue containing the article.
Document two should include the manuscript title (capitalize initial letter only of first word as well as any proper nouns), the word count of the manuscript (including references and any endnotes), an abstract (150 words), and the manuscript text (of between 5,000 and 7,000 words), including references. Pages should be numbered.
Do not use your name when labelling documents. Instead use Doc1.doc and Doc2.doc or something similarly anonymous (eg. abbreviated manuscript title 1 and 2).
Refereeing. All submissions undergo rigorous peer review, involving initial editor screening and then review by at least two anonymous referees. Please note that the refereeing process normally takes 4 to 6 weeks. To allow for anonymous refereeing, do not include any text in Document two (including in its headers, footers, endnotes and references) that would indicate the manuscript's authorship. For example, if referencing your own previously published work and the text indicates that it is your work, replace your name with AAA (or similar). This can be reversed after the refereeing process is completed.
As well as removing your identity from the text within Document two, you need to remove any identifying information automatically recorded in the document's properties. To see if Microsoft Word is recording your name, pull down the "File" menu, click on "Properties," and select the "Summary" tab. Remove any identifying information and then save the document.
Journal style
Contributors should be aware that they are addressing an international audience. Avoid the use of terms that might be meaningful only to a local or national audience, or provide a clear explanation where this is unavoidable.
Sponsorship of research reported (e.g. by research councils, government departments and agencies) should be declared (at least in an endnote).
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures must each be provided on a separate sheet and not included as part of the text. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript (Document Two; see above).
Figures should be supplied in finished form, suitable for reproduction and as near to the finished size as possible. Avoid the use of colour and tints; figures will normally be reproduced in black and white. Subtle variations in grey tones should also be avoided. Strong contrasts such as black/white and cross-hatched patterns give a better printed result.
Images should be supplied in TIFF, PostScript, EPS or JPEG at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI.
