Instructions for Authors
1. Introduction
Contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.
2. Submitting a Paper to BSHM Bulletin: Journal of the British Society for the History of Mathematics
Articles, reports, and book reviews should be submitted for consideration to the Editor:
Jackie Stedall, The Queen's College, Oxford, OX1 4AW, UK.
Email: jackie.stedall@queens.ox.ac.uk.
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts as email attachments using a standard program such as MSWord or LaTeX. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on disc or CD-ROM. BSHM Bulletin does not accept typed or handwritten manuscripts. Please send images and illustrations as hard copy or preferably as separate files, not embedded into the text, with reproduction permissions, captions, and clear instructions for placement.
3. General Guidelines
BSHM Bulletin considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to BSHM Bulletin, that they have not been published already, and that they are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs that BSHM Bulletin incurs and their papers will not be published.
Articles submitted to BSHM Bulletin will be subjected to review by referees at the Editor's discretion.
Figures which appear in black-and-white or greyscale in the print edition of the Journal will automatically appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied. Authors may pay to publish colour illustrations in the print edition, but please consult the publisher regarding cost before submission.
Writing your paper
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms must not be used.
- Papers are accepted only in English.
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses on the cover page of manuscripts.
- Abstracts of 100-150 words are required for all papers submitted and should precede the text of a paper.

5. Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, in the British Society for the History of Mathematics. This enables Taylor & Francis to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found here. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Exceptions are made for Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
For details on copyright permission click here. Copies of the permission letters should be sent with the manuscript to the Editor.
