Instructions for Authors

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS AND CONTRIBUTORS TO JCDS

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Journal of the Community Development Society regards submission of a manuscript as a commitment by the author(s) that is not to be breached by submission to another journal while the manuscript is under review.

Manuscript Preparation:

1. General Guidelines:

  • Please delete all identifying names/institutions, as Community Development uses a double-blind peer review process. All authors should be listed during the submission process.
  • Papers are accepted only in English. American English spelling and punctuation is preferred.
  • The manuscript should be no longer than 25 pages formatted to 8 ½” x 11” (21cm x 27cm). Double space all material, including indented passages, footnotes, and references, and use ragged right margins without hyphens.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual sheets); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • An Abstract of between 100-150 words is required for all papers submitted.
  • Authors must supply from three (3) to five (5) alphabetized keywords or phrases that identify the most important subjects covered by the paper.
  • Endnotes should be used sparingly in the text for substantive comments only, not for bibliographic references. Notes should be numbered consecutively on a separate page following the text.
  • Manuscripts written in the first person narrative will not be accepted.

2. Style Guidelines:

References in the Text. References in the body of the text should include the name of the author(s) cited and date of reference in parentheses within the manuscript, e.g., (Walzer, 2006). Do not use ibid., op. cit., loc. cit., etc. If reference is a direct quote, include page number, e.g., (Walzer, 2006, p. 3). For repeat citations, continue to use name of author(s) and date. In case of multiple works with the same author(s) and publication year, use “1991a,” “1991b,” etc.

References at End of Article. Complete data on all references should follow standard APA (American Psychological Association) Research Style Crib Sheet guidelines. At the end of your article, list all references alphabetically, including page numbers, volume and issue numbers of journals, and all authors' names. Format for articles, books, and articles in books is as follows:

Journal article:

Brennan, M.A., & Israel, G.D. (2008). The power of community. Community Development: Journal of the Community Development Society, 39(1), 82-97.

Book:

McKibbin, B. (2007). Deep economy: The wealth of communities and the durable future. New York: Times Books/Henry Holt and Co.

Chapter in a Book:

Pigg, K.E., & Bradshaw, T.K. (2003). Catalytic community development: A theory of practice for changing rural society. In D.L. Brown 7 L.E. Swanson (Eds.), Challenges for rural America in the twenty-first century (pp. 385-396). University Park, PA: Pennsylvania State University Press.

3. Figures

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Illustrations (including photographs, graphs and diagrams) should be referred to as Figures and their position indicated in the text (e.g. Figure 3). Each figure should be numbered with Figure number (Arabic numerals).
  • Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

4. Colour

The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

5. Reproduction of copyright material

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

6. Supplementary online material

Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Manuscript submission

With the exception of Book Reviews which should be submitted directly to the Book Review Editor Anne Heinze Silvis (asilvis@uiuc.edu), all submissions should be made online at the journal's ScholarOneTM Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to reviewers. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review.”

Manuscripts may be submitted in any standard format, including Word, PostScript and PDF. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process.

Authors are invited to nominate up to two referees (not from their own institution) although it is not guaranteed that they will be consulted.

Please indicate if the manuscript is intended for a Special Issue and to which Guest Editor it is intended.

Copyright and authors' rights

It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Exceptions are made for Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties.  We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Reprints

Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com). Reprints of articles published in Community Development can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received.
