Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems is devoted to scholarly research on the development, planning, management, operation and evaluation of intelligent transportation systems. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are innovative solutions that address contemporary transportation problems. They are characterized by dynamic information feedback and automation that allow people and goods to move more efficiently. They encompass the full scope of information technologies used in transportation, including control, computation and communication, as well as the algorithms, databases, models and human interfaces. The emergence of these technologies as a new pathway for transportation is relatively recent. The Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems is especially interested in these new pathways and research that leads to improved planning and operation of the transportation system through the application of new technologies. A key objective of the journal is to publish research that adds to the scientific understanding of intelligent transportation systems impacts on accessibility, congestion, pollution, safety, security, noise, and energy and resource consumption. The journal is inter-disciplinary, and accepts work from the fields of engineering, economics, planning, policy, business and management, as well as any other disciplines that contribute to the scientific understanding of ITS. The journal is also multi-modal, and accepts work on intelligent transportation for all forms of ground, air and water transportation. Example topics include the role of dynamic information in transportation, planning for ITS, diffusion of ITS, traffic flow and control, vehicle control, automated highway systems, routing and scheduling, evaluations of ITS field operational tests, ITS deployment experiences, and tools/software for planning and operating ITS. ITS deployment experiences, automated highway systems, vehicle control systems, diffusion of ITS, and tools/software for analysis of ITS.

Submission of Manuscripts

Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts online. You need to follow a few easy steps and do NOT need a login name or password. At the J-ITS manuscript submission website, you will be asked to i) Enter information about yourself, (if you are not already in our database) in three easy steps. ii) Enter details of the manuscript (title, abstract, keywords, whether a new submission or re-submission, whether a regular or special issue paper, suggested J-ITS editor and any comments). iii) Upload your manuscript preferably in PDF format along with a cover letter. The cover letter should provide a contribution statement by answering the following questions: Why the research was done? Who would be interested in the results? Why is the study a substantial improvement over past work? Is the paper complete and current (e.g., data were collected recently). iv) Verify your submission.

To go to the online submission, please click on the following link: https://editorialexpress.com/its/

Online submission will typically ensure a timely review of the manuscript. If you have any questions or problems, please contact support at support@editorialexpress.com

In case it is impossible to submit the manuscript online, please feel free to email it to the Editor-in-Chief, along with a contribution statement. Otherwise, please send five hardcopies to the Editor-in-Chief or to the appropriate Associate Editor. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on a CD or a disk. The CD or disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the i) authors' names, ii) complete postal addresses, iii) e-mail addresses, iv) telephone and fax numbers, v) file name, and vi) software program. The five hardcopies should exactly match the electronic version supplied on the CD or disk. The main text should be broken down into appropriate sections such as methodology, results, discussion, etc. Footnotes are not allowed. The text of a full-length manuscript should be between 3,000 and 7,000 words, including the abstract and references. Only under special circumstances will longer manuscripts be considered. The number of tables and figures should not exceed 15. The journal will also accept short technical notes of 2,000 to 3,000 words, and the technical comments on papers published in previous issues may be of even shorter length.

Each manuscript submitted for review must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. The manuscript submitted for review should be typewritten, single-spaced, with at least one inch (2.5 cm) margins using a times roman font of size 12.

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. By signing the copyright, the author does not relinquish the proprietary rights. All parts of the final manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch (2.5 cm) on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper and submit electronic copies of the manuscript in Microsoft Word format.

References

References should appear in the “Chicago” style in a separate reference section at the end of the paper, with items referred to in the text by last name of the first author and the year of publication. References should be listed in alphabetical order, followed by year of publication. Only the first letter of the first word should be capitalized for paper titles. Volume numbers should be indicated with a bold number, which should be immediately followed by page numbers.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

Color Reproduction. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.

Tables and Figures

For the accepted manuscript, tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included at the end of the text. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included in the table. The font size for the numbers and text in the table should be at least 10 Times Roman. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction.
