Instructions for Authors

Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Initial Manuscript Submission. Authors should submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Denise Phillips, School of City & Regional Planning, Cardiff University, Glamorgan Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff CF10 3WA, Wales, UK. E-mail: jepp1@cardiff.ac.uk Papers may be submitted on disk so long as a hard copy is included.

Electronic submission. An electronic copy of the final, revised and accepted manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format are preferred, but other common word-processing programs and Macs are acceptable, write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original, unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3 cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

The title page must list the full title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.

Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).

Supply an abstract of up to 200 words for all articles except reports and reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.

Illustrations. Illustrations must accompany the manuscript but should not be included in the text. Photographs and line drawings should be referred to as Fig. 1, Fig. 2 etc. They should he numbered in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Line drawings should be submitted in a form ready for reproduction. They should be drawn in black indian ink on white card or tracing paper. Figures will normally be reduced in size on reproduction and authors should draw with this in mind. With a reduction of 2:1 in mind authors should use lines not less than 0.25mm thick, and upper and lower case lettering, the capitals of which should be 4 mm high. To keep within the type area of the Journal, drawings for a 2:1 reduction should not exceed 270mm in width. Stencil lettering or Letraset should be used; typewritten annotations are not acceptable.

Photographs should be black and white glossy prints, mounted on lightweight white card with protective overlays if possible. Each should have written lightly on the hack the author's name, the figure number and an indication of which is top. If possible suitable photographs should be grouped together on one plate. Colour illustrations can be reproduced if the additional cost is met by the author. Photographs can be sent on disk, but the hard copy (originals) must also be supplied. Save all photographs as high resolution images.

Figures may be supplied on disk and should be saved in either TIFF (tagged image file format) or EPS (encapsulated postscript) formats. However, PICT or JPEG are acceptable. High quality reproducible (i.e. high resolution output) hard copy paper printouts must be supplied for all figures and must be identical to the disk versions, in case the disk version is unusable. Figure captions should also be saved in the same file as the figure, not with the text file. If figure files are very large, they may be saved on a separate disk. If compressing a file is necessary, please use 'WinZip'. Please ensure this is clearly labelled.

Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998). All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Proofs. will be sent to the corresponding author for correction. The difficulty and expense involved in making amendments at proof stage make it essential for authors to prepare their manuscripts carefully, any alterations to the original text are strongly discouraged. Our aim is for rapid publication; this will be helped if authors provide good copy, following the above instructions and return their proof as quickly as possible.

Free article access: Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

Copyright and authors' rights: It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Reproduction of copyright material

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as 'derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).
