Bilingual Research Journal
Instructions for Authors
Aims and Scope: The Bilingual Research Journal (BRJ) covers a wide range of topics relating to bilingual education, bilingualism in society, and language policy in education.
Submissions are encouraged from scholars and practitioners in a wide range of areas: language assessment, policy analysis, instructional research, language politics, all forms of bilingual education, bilingualism and biliteracy, language planning, critical theory as applied to language issues, action research, sociolinguistics, second language teaching and learning, etc.
As the official organ of the National Association for Bilingual Education, BRJ editorial policy reflects the intrinsic and inherent value of bilingualism, biliteracy, and linguistic democracy.
BRJ accepts manuscripts written in English or Spanish. Articles written in Spanish need not be translated, although a two-page abstract in English is requested.
Address Manuscripts to the Editor: Contact the editors, Kathy Escamilla (kathy.escamilla@colorado.edu) or María Franquiz (franquiz@austin.utexas.edu) to find out the preferred way to submit manuscripts electronically. The preferred format for electronic file submissions is MS Word. Please include on the title page of your submission your most recent mailing address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address where you may be reached.
The editors request that manuscripts be a maximum of 30 computer-produced pages, double spaced, in 12-point type, using 8.5 by 11 inch paper, with one inch margins all around. Book reviews should be from 5 to 7 pages long, including references, and sent to Iliana.Alanis@utsa.edu or Patricia.Sanchez@utsa.edu
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words and three or four key words provided. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.
References. References, citations, and general style of manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 5th ed.
Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
-
300 dpi or higher
-
Sized to fit on journal page
-
EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
-
Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Illustrations. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. A custom quote will be provided for articles.
Tables and Figures. Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction.
Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Reprints and Issues. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication. Each corresponding author will receive 1 complete issue in which the article publishes and a complimentary PDF. This file is for personal use only and may not be copied and disseminated in any form without prior written permission from Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
