Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: Please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Aims and Scope

Asian Security aims to be the foremost journal on all aspects of national and international security in Asia. The journal will cover ‘traditional' issues like interstate warfare, the regional balance of power, alliances and other multilateral security institutions, national defense policies, strategic culture, civil-military relations, nuclear proliferation, conventional arms racing, arms control, and conflict-prone areas, as well as ‘new' security issues like the stability of democratic transitions, globalization and its backlash, ethnic conflict, insurgency and counterinsurgency, failing states, and transnational terrorism.

Address manuscripts to the Editor: asiansecurity.editors@gmail.com.  The manuscript should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors' names, file name, and software program. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 125 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract. Authors should also submit a bio of no more than 75 words that will run at the end of the article.

Asian Security does not evaluate works already published elsewhere or submitted to another publisher. A manuscript is clearly not original enough if as much as half of the ideas or evidence will have appeared in a book or elsewhere first. If a question of overlap arises, at the time of submission please send a copy of the earlier work and ask the editors for a determination. An article appearing in a forthcoming book may be published in Asian Security upon consultation with the editors. An article length of 7,000 to 12,000 words, including notes, is appropriate. Research notes and review essays are shorter.

The editors will strive to inform authors of a decision within 3 months of their manuscript submission. Manuscripts of a standard ready for publication have the best chance of being sent for review. Authors should not submit incomplete or initial drafts of manuscripts, as these will generally not be sent for review nor considered for publication.

Notes

Notes should be numbered consecutively throughout the article with a raised numeral corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end of the article. Book titles and names of journals should be in italic; titles of articles and chapters in edited collections should be in quotation marks. For example:

Amartya Sen, Development As Freedom (New York: Knopf, 1999).
Sumit, Ganguly, “India's Pathway to Pokhran II,'' International Security Vol. 23, No. 4, pp. 148--77.
A. Martin Wainwright, “Regional Security and Paramount Powers: The British Raj and Independent India,'' in Marvin Weinbaum and Chetan Kumar, eds., South Asia Approaches the Millenium (Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1995), pp. 41--62.

After the first full citation, do not use op.cit or ibid.; use author's name and a short form of the title. For example:

Sen, Development as Freedom.
Ganguly, “India's Pathway to Pokhran II.''
Wainwright, “Regional Security and Paramount Powers.''

Avoid extracts, tables, and paragraphing in notes. Authors are responsible for accuracy of facts and citations.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Offprints/Reprints

Each corresponding author will receive one copy of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
