Instructions for Authors

SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES

If submitting by parcel post, authors are required to submit four copies of their articles to facilitate and speed the process of obtaining reviews. Papers should be sent to Roslyn Muraskin, Editor, Criminal Justice Studies, Department of Criminal Justice, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, Roth Hall 118, 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville, NY 11548-1300, USA. If you wish to submit your article electronically, please email it as an attached word document to: roslyn.muraskin@liu.edu

Authors will be informed at the earliest possible date of our readers' decisions. Submission of an article will be taken to imply that it has never been published previously in any form and has not simultaneously been offered to any other publication.

FORM AND LENGTH

All articles should be typed in double spacing with wide margins (1 inch or 2.5 cm) on one side of letter-sized paper. Pages of each copy must be sequentially numbered. Type section headings all in capitals and underlined, ranged left; for sub-section headings only the first letter of main words should be capitalized and the entire heading underlined. In either case, the text should start on the next line. The maximum preferred length is 20 double-spaced pages.

For anonymity in the review process, names, affiliations and complete mailing addresses for authors should appear on a separate title page. If affiliations differ, list addresses separately beneath each author's name. Indicate which author will check proofs. Authors should also provide an abbreviation of the paper's title (no more than 35 characters) for use as a running head. Include acknowledgments under a separate head at the paper's end, before the references list.

Each paper requires an abstract of no more than 100 words, as well as a brief biographical statement describing each author's current affiliation and rank which should be presented on a separate sheet. Abstracts should be accompanied by up to 6 key words or phrases that characterize the contents of the paper. These will be used for indexing and data retrieval purposes.

The publisher encourages authors to submit accepted manuscripts on computer disks. Microsoft Word is the preferred software, but other software and formats are acceptable, as are all sized disks. Authors must enclose a printed copy of the manuscript (in quadruplicate) along with the disk. All disks should be marked with the name of the software package that was used and the file name. Disks will be returned to the author with page proofs.

BOOK REVIEWS

Please see below some points for book reviewers with regard to suggested layout and content for book reviews for Criminal Justice Studies:

Heading:

Full title of book
Names of author(s) or editor(s)
Publisher's name, city and year of publication
Number of pages
Name, affiliation of reviewer at end of review

Content of Review:
Describe the basic contents of the book and indicate its nature in approximately 1000 words. Characterize the essential points of the text. Note the author(s) editor(s) stated purpose and then evaluate the book on its merits and whether it achieves its stated aims.

Some questions you may want to consider are:

1. How well is the material selected, organized and presented?
2. Does the author present clear logical arguments or data to support assertions?
3. Does the book attempt too much or too little?
4. If research is described, how is the methodology?
5. Does the book provide anything new or important to the discipline?
6. Is the writing style clear and readable?
7. What other books exist pertaining to the same topic and do they compare?
8. Is this a second or later edition related to an earlier edition?
9. How do you find the appearance of the book, legibility of type, typographical errors, attractiveness of packaging etc.?
10. What is the intended readership? Is this book appropriate for it? Is this book oriented to practitioners, researchers, and consumers? Is this a basic text book or a reference book? Is it geared for specialized readership?

Reviews should be typed in a double space format in Microsoft Word and submitted to the Book Review Editor of Criminal Justice Studies: A Critical Journal of Crime, Law and Society. The review can be submitted via an attachment to an email to Martin.OConnor@liu.edu or mocvoceoc@aol.com or submit the review on a CD to Martin O'Connor, Department of Criminal Justice, Riggs Hall, CW Post of LIU 720 Northern Blvd Brookville, NY 11548-1300 USA.

FIGURES

All figure should be numbered with consecutive arabic numerals, have descriptive captions, and be mentioned in the text. Keep figures separate from the text, but indicate an approximate position for each in the margin. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission from any reproduction of other sources. Figures must be of high enough standard for direct reproduction, prepared in black (india) ink on white (or tracing) paper, with all lettering and symbols included. Alternatively, good sharp photoprints (or "glossies") are acceptable. Photographs must be good glossy original prints of maximum contrast. Using pencil, clearly label each figure with the author's name and figure number. Indicate top where this is not obvious. Redrawing or retouching of unusable figures will be charged to authors. Figures should be submitted as close to final size as possible to minimize reduction; figures will be sized to a maximum of 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide, or less, according to subject matter. Artwork should be labeled so that after reduction, lettering does not exceed 1/8 inch (4 mm) in height.

TABLES

Tables should be typed on separate sheets and numbered consecutively with arabic numerals. Include a short descriptive caption at the top, capitalizing the first letter of the first word. Indicate in the text where the tables are to appear. Avoid the use of vertical rules. Extensive and/or complex tables, computer tables and computer printouts will be reproduced as illustrations. Therefore, they should be typed carefully and in the exact format desired.

SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES ON DISK

The Publisher welcomes article submissions on disk. Disk files should be submitted with the final hard copy on manuscript. The disk file and hard copy must match exactly. Where there is any difference the disk copy will be assumed to be final.

When typing the article do not include design or formatting information. Type all text flush left, unjustified and without hyphenation. Do not use indents, tabs or multi-spacing. If an indent is required, please note it by typing a line space; also mark the position of the indent on the hard copy of the manuscript. Indicate the beginning of a new paragraph by typing a line space. Leave one space only after any punctuation mark. Be sure not to confuse the letter 'I' with the number '1', or capital letter 'O' with zero, '0'. Do not use automatic page numbering or any other headers or footers.

Tables and displayed equations may have to be re-keyed by the typesetter from your hard copy manuscript. Articles prepared on most word-processing packages are acceptable. If equations and/or scientific symbols have been imported from another program, please include details of the program used and the procedures followed. If author-created macros have been used please indicate them as well.

Illustrations that are available in electronic format are acceptable; please supply them on a separate disk. Clearly indicate on the disk the file format and/or program used to produce them, and supply a high quality hard copy of the illustration.

If more than one disk is submitted please number each disk. Mark each disk with the journal title, author name, abbreviated article title and file names. Retain a back-up copy of each disk submitted and pack the disks carefully before shipping. Complete the Author Disk Submission form that appears at the back of the journal (forms may also be obtained from the publisher) and submit it with the disk and hard copy manuscript.
