The International Journal of Space Politics and Policy
Instructions for Authors
Submission of Manuscripts
A typical contributor to Astropolitics is interested in the serious consideration, treatment, and assessment of major political and policy issues in the development and exploration of outer space. The contributor will be someone who wishes to contribute papers that further academic inquiry and intelligently inform major policy issues. Apart from academics, other contributors might include policy analysts at think tanks and research institutes, senior management and policy officials from international and governmental agencies and departments relevant to space issues, military officers, senior management and policy officials from major corporations relevant to space, and scientists and engineers interested or involved in space policy issues.
The editors of Astropolitics are committed to the most rigorous editorial standards for all contributions. Articles submitted to Astropolitics should be original contributions and not under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or will be published elsewhere in whatever format, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.
Articles should be between 8000-10,000 words (including notes and references) as a useful target for research papers. Shorter viewpoint essays of 4000-5000 words are also accepted by Astropolitics. All articles must have an abstract of up to 200 words that describes the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address, and other contact information should be included in a separate file or cover sheet.
Contributors are required to submit all articles electronically by e-mail attachment as a DOC file. All manuscripts submitted need to be double-spaced with margins of 1" or 2.5 cm and numbered consecutively. It is the author's responsibility to ensure appropriate copyright permissions if applicable. Each accepted manuscript must be accompanied by a signed copyright form. Copyright for articles published in Astropolitics rests with the publisher.
Manuscripts, editorial correspondence, and book reviews should be sent to Eligar Sadeh at esadeh@gmail.com. Books for review by Astropolitics should be sent to Eligar Sadeh President, Astroconsulting International 830 E Cache La Poudre, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 USA.
Editorial Procedures
Providing the manuscript submitted meets editorial standards—relevance to Astropoltics' aims and scopes, analytical rigor, spelling, grammar, style, and suitable length—the editors will first undertake a peer review. If required, the author will be invited to make any changes and corrections by the editors. For viewpoint essays and book reviews, the process stops here and a publication decision is made.
Following this, the manuscript will be sent to appropriate members of the editorial board for peer review. With this, the author and peer reviewers shall remain unknown to each other to ensure impartiality. On the basis of the peer review, the editors will make a final decision for publication. If required, the author will be required to make additional changes and corrections.
Tables and Figures
All maps, diagrams, charts, and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered and given appropriate captions. Captions for each figure should be submitted on the same page as the figure to avoid confusion. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text. Figures and tables are not to be embedded in the text. Each table and figure should be clearly labeled.
Any photographs should be copied into a separate file in uncompressed .TIF or .JPEG formats. Maps and diagrams should be placed in a separate Word or RTF file. Tints should be avoided; use open patterns instead. If maps and diagrams cannot be prepared electronically, they should be presented on high quality white paper. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
- 300 dpi or higher
- sized to fit within a typeset journal page (24 x 41 picas or 4 x 6.75 inches)
- EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
- submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Style
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the style of the journal. The editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. Please follow the style of example articles that you can download from the Astropolitics web site or by default follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
Notes
Notes should be numbered consecutively in the text with superscripted numerals corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end of the article. Please make use of the Insert-Preference-Footnote function of Word, and use the endnote style (please do not use footnotes, scientific notation, or bibliographical references). References to books and book chapters should appear in the following format:
Everett Dolman, Astropolitik: Classical Geopolitics in the Space Age (London, UK: Frank Cass, 2002).
Eligar Sadeh, ed., Space Politics and Policy: An Evolutionary Perspective (New York, NY: Springer, 2003). Howard McCurdy, “Space Bureaucracy,” in Eligar Sadeh, ed., Space Politics and Policy: An Evolutionary Perspective (New York, NY: Springer, 2003).
Repeated references to the same book provided that there are no references to other works by the same author, may, after the first reference, be indicated by the author's surname and the page numbers: Dolman (note 1): 27. A reference to a single source in the previous quote can be replaced by ibid.
References to articles in periodicals should appear in the following format:
