Jews and Modernity: Beyond the Nation

• The nation state paradigm still casts a long shadow over modern Jewish history, obscuring trans-national and sub-national affiliations, new and old. Jews who left the ghetto did not only become French, German of American citizens they also became Parisians, Frankfurters and Chicagoans. This special issue presents different perspectives on the trans- and sub-national dimension of modern Jewish history.
