Instructions for Authors

 Instructions for Authors

The Journal of the Royal Musical Association
only accepts for review manuscripts that are written in English and submitted electronically via The Journal of the Royal Musical Association's Manuscript Central site.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text including the manuscript title, institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), the word count of the manuscript (including footnotes, but excluding references), an abstract (150 words or less), a short biographical statement about each author (75 words or less), 3-6 keywords that reflect the manuscript's content, author contact details (including email and full postal addresses), and the name of the corresponding author who will check proofs and receive offprints.  When uploading their files, authors should define this non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

The second version of the manuscript should have all information identifying the author removed to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees. This file should be defined as “Main Document.”

If tables and/or figures form part of the manuscript, these should be attached as separate, additional files (see below).

Authors should ensure that their manuscript is in keeping with the Journal's editorial statement (see Aims and Scope). Manuscripts submitted should be original, not under review by any other publication and not published elsewhere. All pages should be numbered. Sponsorship of research reported (e.g. by research councils etc.) should be declared.

Non-native English speakers will be expected to have their manuscripts proof-read and edited by a native English speaker prior to final submission.

Essays in JRMA generally average at around 15,000 words in length (including notes and appendices), but there is flexibility, depending on the nature of the content and the extent of supporting musical examples and illustrations. Authors should also note that it is possible to submit supporting audio/visual files, provided the appropriate rights have been cleared.

Tables and figures should not be included as part of the text but should be uploaded as additional files. Captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed on a separate page. Captions should include keys to any symbols used. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals and their approximate positions should be indicated in the manuscript. Please supply artwork for figures in finished form as separate, clearly labelled files. Figures may be supplied in TIFF, JPEG or EPS format; a minimum resolution of 300 dots per inch is required. All figures should be suitable for reproduction as supplied and will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
