Instructions for Authors
- Polity monographs and focus issues papers are normally between 20,000 and 40,000 words. Authors seeking to publish these extended articles should first contact one of the editors with a proposal. Preferred submissions are as an e-mail attachment with a single paper copy and are subject to review. Further polity studies guidelines are available here.
- Submissions of related issues articles should normally not exceed 7000 words while Comments and Readers' Response sections many be up to 3000 words. Interactive web-site contributions are welcomed. All articles are subject to review.
- The printed copy should be typed, double-spaced on A4 (or 8 ½” x 11”) paper, with ample left- and right-hand margins, on one side of the paper only. A cover page should contain only the title, thereby facilitating anonymous reviewing by two independent assessors. Authors may wish to take precautions to avoid textual references that would identify themselves to the referees. In such cases the authors of accepted papers will have the opportunity to include any such omitted material before the paper is published.
- A separate abstract not exceeding 200 words should be included.
- To facilitate the production of the annual subject index, a list of not more that six key words should be provided, under which the paper may be indexed.
- Footnotes should be avoided. Essential notes should be numbered in the text and grouped together at the end of the article.
- Diagrams and Figures, if they are considered essential, should be clearly related to the section of the text to which they refer. The original diagrams and figures should be submitted with the paper copy.

- Authors should, if possible, submit a word-processed e-mail attachment or a high-density IBM-PC/AppleMac 3.5” disc containing the preliminary and on acceptance the final version of their manuscript. Files should be saved in the author's normal word-processor format, together with a note of the name of the word-processor used. Tables and Figures (TIFF or EPS format preferred) should be saved in separate files from the rest of the manuscript.
- The author of an article accepted for publication will receive page proofs for correction, if there is sufficient time to do so. This stage must not be used as an opportunity to revise the paper, because alterations are extremely costly; extensive changes will be charged to the author and will probably result in the articles being delayed to a later issue. Speedy return of corrected proofs is important.
- On publication authors will receive a PDF file of their article and 2 copies of the journal free of charge. Additional copies may be ordered when returning corrected proofs and a scale of charges will be sent at the appropriate time.
- Contributions and initial queries should be sent to the Executive Editor: Professor Richard B. Baldauf, Jr, School of Education, University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane, QLD 4072 Australia (r.baldauf@uq.edu.au).
