Instructions for Authors

Instructions for Authors:

All submissions should be made online at the National Identities Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

National Identities is subject to a peer review process and is published four times a year. Key themes are the relationship of identity and ethnicity, the role in forging identity of cultural (language, gender, religion, architecture, the media, sport, encounters with 'the other', etc.) and political (state forms, wars, boundaries) factors, by examining the ways in which these have been shaped and changed over time, and the transmission and persistence of national identities, and we welcome articles relevant to these themes dealing with any period of history, or even pre-history.

Articles submitted to the journal should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time.

Articles should be double-spaced throughout, with the pages, including those containing illustrative material, numbered sequentially.

Articles should be no longer than 8,000 words and include a 100 word abstract. Authors should also provide a list of approximately 5 or 6 keywords, along with brief biographical details, institutional affiliations, and full correspondence address (including an e-mail address).

Please note that you will be required to choose an editor to handle your paper, although at the editor's discretion it may not ultimately be handled by the chosen editor. The division is as follows:

  • Peter Catterall - Politics/Political History,
  • Dave Kaplan - Geography
  • Elfie Rembold - Cultural History
  • Christopher Vernon - Arts/Architecture/Landscape

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
