Mortality welcomes all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Mortality, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Mortality incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Mortality must report original research and will be subjected to independent and anonymous peer review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office. We are not able to guarantee comments beyond acceptance or rejection. It is a condition of acceptance that papers become the copyright of the publisher.

• Papers are accepted only in English. British English spelling and punctuation is preferred
• Manuscripts may be in the form of (1) A research paper not exceeding 8,000 words; or (2) reviews; or (3) short reports for rapid publication (not exceeding 2,000 words). Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
• Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgements; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
• The first page should include the title of the paper, full name(s) of the author(s), and for each author an affiliation, postal address, telephone and fax numbers and an email address. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
• Please supply a short biographical note (50 words maximum), and an abbreviated title (for running headlines within the article).
• At the bottom of the first page give the full name and address (including telephone and email address) of the author to whom all correspondence (including proofs) should be sent. Subheadings should be typed on a separate line without numbering, indentation or bold or italic typeface.
• Abstracts of not more than 200 words are required for all papers submitted.
• Each paper should have 5 to 6 keywords.
• Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
• Please supply a short biographical note for each author.
• For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
• When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

• It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
• All illustrations (including photographs, graphs and diagrams) should be referred to as Figures and their position indicated in the text (e.g. Fig. 3).
• Figures should ideally be professionally drawn and designed with the format of the journal (175x248 mm) in mind and should be capable of reduction.
• Figures must be saved separate to text, each on a separate piece of paper and numbered on the back with Figure number (Arabic numerals) and the title of the paper. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
• Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
• All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
• Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly. They should allow interpretation possible without reference to the text.
• The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

Manuscript submission

Mortality only accepts electronic submission. All submissions should be made online at the Mortality ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.
