Instructions for Authors
Manuscripts should not exceed 9,500 words or approximately 24 pages double-spaced (including notes and references). The article should begin with an indented and italicized abstract of 100 words, which describes the main arguments and conclusions of the article. The details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and contact information, the exact length of the article, a brief biographical description (about 40 words), and any acknowledgments should be included on a separate cover-sheet. Manuscripts are sent out for anonymous review; consequently we would encourage authors to refrain from posting their name or affiliation on any materials that may be sent out to referees (i.e., the manuscript, tables, associated graphical presentations, etc.). Finally, the journal prefers numerical superscript over parenthetical notation and encourages author to abide by these guidelines when citing.
Each manuscript should be submitted electronically to the editor, Dr. William Safran, at safran@colorado.edu as well as in three hard copies to Dr. William Safran, University of Colorado, UCB 333, Boulder, CO 80309-0333.
Each table and figure must be followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data, and should be consecutively numbered. Tables should be prepared using tabs and supplied in separate files. Diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures. Any diagrams or maps should be copied to separate files in .TIF or .JPG formats. Tints and colors should be avoided. These may be submitted in separate files or emailed as attachments. If figures are provided in hard copy only, they will be scanned and therefore must be supplied on good quality white paper and contain no handwriting or other marks.
It is the author's responsibility to ensure that where copyright materials are included within an article the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included with the submission. Copyright in articles published in Nationalism and Ethnic Politics rests with the publisher.
Style
- Spelling and punctuation: American spelling throughout, with "ize" endings (not "ise").
- Quotation marks: double in text throughout; single within single; single within indented quotations.
- Dates and Numbers: 12 July 1981; 1981-82; the 1980s (not "the eighties"). Abbreviate Aug. to Feb; spell out March to July. Numbers: one-ten; 11, etc.
- Capitalization: use capitals sparingly. Use for titles (President Chiluba) and for unique institutions (the Central Committee, the Knesset) but lower case for provincial organs and lower-grade offices. Capitalize party in a title (the Conservative Party), otherwise lower case (the party's membership). Capitalize left as a noun (the French Left), otherwise lower case (left-wing politicians). Capitalize Eastern Europe, the West and Western bloc (as political entities). Capitalize communist, socialist etc only in titles.
