Giraffes in Zebra Skins: Researchers as Spectators at a Consumer Electronics Show.

The articles by “swarm participants” in this special issue of Social Identities, then, reflect on our collective Consumer Electronics Show (CES) experience to deconstruct and critique modes of data collection from this massive event; they reveal the formations and transformations of the researcher, the assumptions and power differentials among developers, exhibitors and their audience/potential consumers, and the social and political implications of conducting scholarly research both as and within a time-sensitive, fast-paced phenomenon in a technophilic environment. These articles exhibit the multilayered, multivocal interpretations of an emerging research method. Researcher identity and interpretation are articulated based on academic discipline and theoretical and methodological approach. What makes these varied essays a collection is the commonality of site, intention, and possibility. While the authors may disagree on the degree to which the swarm method needs refinement for it to be a viable approach, they are in agreement that the process was a valuable lesson in researcher identity and scholarly collaborative possibility for the humanities and social sciences, especially in inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations.
