Instructions for Authors
***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***
Formerly "Giornale Botanico Italiano" Official Journal of the Società Botanica Italiana.
The "Giornale Botanico Italiano" was first edited by Filippo Parlatore in 1844, but the publication lasted only two years. The Journal was resumed in 1869 with the name "Nuovo Giornale Botanico Italiano" on the initiative of an informal association of the most prominent Italian botanists. Since 1894 it has been edited by Società Botanica Italiana, and in 1962 the original name was restored. In 1997 the name was changed to Plant Biosystems in order to stress the scope and the international character of the journal. Plant Biosystems is an English-language journal which encompasses the entire spectrum of plant biology, from the subcellular level to ecosystems and from microrganisms to flowering plants.
All articles will be published online at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/11263504.asp
Manuscript Submission
Authors are kindly requested to read carefully the following instructions. Manuscripts will be considered for publication only if they are in accord with these instructions. The latest issues of the journal should be used as a guide to the formal layout.
Plant Biosystems is an international journal, publishing original papers pertaining to all aspects of plant biology. Manuscripts that contain new and significant findings are welcome with the understanding that the contents have not been published in or submitted to any other journal. Manuscripts are classified as Full Paper, Rapid Report and Short Communication. A manuscript can be published as a Rapid Report if it presents novel and relevant findings in a concise form. The Editor will determine whether or not a submission can be classified as Rapid Report. A Short Communication (no more than two printed pages) is for a concise but independent report. It is not intended for the publication of preliminary results. In addition, Review Articles will be published, but only upon invitation by the Editor.
Manuscripts will be examined by two independent referees before any decision is taken regarding acceptance and changes required. Papers should be clearly and concisely written in correct English; this is the responsibility of the authors. If the manuscript has not been reviewed by a native-English speaker, it will be sent for language review by the Editor. If the language is exceedingly poor, however, the authors may be asked to have it corrected by a linguist prior to re-submission of the revised version.
Manuscript Preperation
Manuscripts should be typewritten, double- spaced throughout, on one side only of A4 paper with margins of at least 3 cm all around.
Email submissions are preferred. Please email your submission to the Editorial office at plantbio@uniroma1.it.
Alternatively, the original manuscript, on paper and on diskette, and three copies should be sent to: Sandro Bonacquisti, Department of Plant Biology, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Piazzale A. Moro 5, I- 00185 Rome, Italy.
Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: a) Cover page, containing the Running title, not exceeding 40 characters including letters and spaces, the name and address of the corresponding author, including telephone and fax numbers and E-mail address. b) Title page, containing the title of the article, the full name of the author(s), the abstract (no more than 200 words for a Full Paper, less than 50 words for a Rapid Report or Short Communication), the key words (up to six, in alphabetical order), the list of abbreviations used (if applicable). c)Text. d) Acknowledgements. e) References in alphabetical order. f) Tables. g) Legends to figures. h) Figures. i) Complete addresses of the author(s).
The text should be subdivided into the following sections : Introduction (without heading), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion. The approximate desired position of all figures and tables should be indicated in the margins of the text.7. The names of the authors should be written in SMALL CAPITALS. All taxonomic names subjected to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature should be written in italics. Latin names of plant communities should also be written in italics. The International System of Units (SI System) should be used throughout. Herbaria should be quoted using the abbreviations published in the Index Herbariorum.
Details should be given on the origin and the identification of every organism quoted. Scientific names should conform to the international rules of nomenclature. Authors of the genera, species and infraspecific taxa must be either cited when first mentioned in the text or all included in a single list. The location of voucher specimens should be indicated.
References
References should follow the Council of Biology Editors (CBE) style. Only works actually cited in the text should be included in the references. The name-year system should be used: place inside brackets the author's name and year of publication. Publications from the same author in a single year should use a, b, c, etc. Where there are three or more authors, the citation should give only the first author followed by "et al." (e.g., Smith et al. 1928). Spelling in the reference list should follow the original. References should then be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the article. Articles that have been accepted for publication can be cited as being "in press" in the list of references.
