General
GFF publishes;
articles (papers exceeding 4 printed pages),
notes (papers not exceeding 4 printed pages) and
letters (1 printed page).

Notes and letters are usually published faster than articles. Debate articles (discussion and reply papers) and literature reviews are welcome. Occasionally, GFF publishes meeting proceedings, i.e., extended abstracts of talks given at a symposium arranged by the Society or some other body of geologists.

All manuscripts submitted to GFF are subject to peer review, normally by two referees. It is understood that the paper submitted has not been published in a scientific journal before, and is not simultaneously being considered for publication elsewhere.

Submissions
Manuscripts, conforming with the specific instructions below, are to be submitted online at the GFF Manuscript Central site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sgff). New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Proofs
Only page-proofs are sent to the author. Changes against the final version will be accepted as long as they are of importance for the understanding and accuracy of the paper.

Language
Definition and naming of new stratigraphic units should conform to the rules decided by the IUGS International Commission on Stratigraphy. New mineral names and redefinitions of existing names must be approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) before publication.

Language
The language of GFF is English (British or American consistently).

Title
The title should be brief and informative. Avoid parentheses and subtitles.

Abstract and keywords
Articles and notes must have an abstract and a set of keywords. The abstract of an article should not exceed 250 words, and that of a note should not exceed 100 words. The abstract should convey the scope of the paper, emphasizing the results and conclusions. The number of keywords should be at least 4 but not more than 12.

Author
In addition to writing the name of the author(s) after the title, a separate paragraph including name, current address, and e-mail address or telefax number of each author should follow the abstract.

Text and citations
The submitted manuscript should have a left-hand margin of c. 5 cm. Use double-spacing throughout, also for abstract, tables, and figure captions. SI units should be used consistently with their official symbols. Use three or fewer orders of headings. Do not write headings with capital letters. Citations are given in the form of the author's surname followed by the year of publication (e.g., Andréasson et al. 1985; Åberg 1988; Andréasson & Rodhe 1990). Always give complete citations.

References
Only published papers are to be incorporated into the reference list, with the exception of Ph.D. and M.Sc. theses, and papers that have been accepted for publication (i.e., in press). Papers in publication or in manuscript cannot, of course, be included in a reference list.

For non-Roman alphabets the names of the authors and the titles of books should be transcribed and for Cyrillic alphabets transliterated. Journal titles must be given unabbreviated. Inclusive pagination should be given for all papers in journals or published as part of a book. For books and nonserial papers, the total number of pages is sufficient. The publisher should be given for books. Examples:

Tables
Keep the number of tables to a minimum and make them as small and simple as possible. Do not use heavy lines, screened cells, boldface characters, or vertical lines, etc., and avoid designing tables to be turned 90° on the page. Authors will be charged for the editorial handling of very large and/or complicated tables. The per-hour charge is SEK 300 (approx. EUR 33, USD 44).

Figures
Figures are printed in one of the following widths (in mm): 59, 90, 122, 148, or 185. The maximum height is 240 mm. All figures are placed in the text, so, in the event of a full-page illustration, try to allow space for the caption to come within the page depth. Use the available area: no unnecessary space between items and no protruding text. In a composite figure, all items should be of similar tone and contrast. Line drawings should have lines of even thickness and blackening (in computer drawings, lines must have a thickness of at least 3 pixels), and any screens used should be between 20 and 70%. For metric units, use the standard symbols – µm, mm, m, km. Do not leave out zero before decimal points. Always use capital letters in Helvetica or some other grotesque typeface. It is recommended that digital figures are made in the preferred final print size. Try to use the same font sizes in figures of similar appearance. Final submitted figures should be as digital documents in EPS, PDF, or TIFF-format, other formats are not accepted. Line-drawings should have a resolution of 1200 dpi and photographs should have a resolution of 300 dpi. Non-digital figures should be distinct print-outs, original drawings, or photographs in accordance with the instructions given above. They should not be smaller than the final print and not larger than about 200•300 mm. Photographs must be clear and sharply contrasted. Authors unable to submit figures in fully usable digital formats will be charged for the extra editorial work needed. The per-hour charge is SEK 300 (approx. EUR 33, USD 44).

Colour
There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree on an appropriate number of colour pages. If the colour page budget is exceeded, authors will be given the option to provide a financial contribution to additional colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
