In 1871, a group of geologists working at the Geological Survey of Sweden, at that time in Stockholm, founded a geological society named “Geologiska Foreningen i Stockholm” (‘the Geological Society in Stockholm'), the first of its kind in Sweden. In response to its character and function as the national geological society it was renamed “Geologiska Foreningen” in 1976, its name in English being “The Geological Society of Sweden”.
