Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope:

Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS) publishes articles, commentaries, and brief research reports on methods of experimentation, husbandry, and care that demonstrably enhance the welfare of all nonhuman animals. For administrative purposes, manuscripts are categorized into the following four content areas: welfare issues arising in laboratory, farm, companion animal, and wildlife/zoo settings. Manuscripts of up to 8,000 words are accepted that present new empirical data or a re-evaluation of available data, conceptual or theoretical analysis, or demonstrations relating to some issue of animal welfare science. The editors also encourage submission of brief research reports and commentaries. In addition, JAAWS publishes letters, announcements of meetings, news, and book reviews. Unsolicited submission of these is welcome.

Guidelines:

All applicable governmental and institutional guidelines regarding the use of human and nonhuman animal subjects must be strictly adhered to. Because JAAWS is devoted to the enhancement of welfare, the editors will not publish studies that, in their view, involve significant pain, distress, harm, or injury to subjects. In the case of nonhuman animals, investigators should indicate the source and eventual disposition of subjects used and describe in detail housing and procedures. The editors strongly encourage discussion of the animal welfare and ethical issues raised by the implementation of their study and implied in the findings. Contributors are also encouraged to use language that acknowledges the individuality and integrity of members of other species. For example, where possible use gender-specific personal pronouns (he or she) and personal forms of the relative pronouns (who, not which), avoid terms such as it and the organism, and replace such phrases as "laboratory, farm, and zoo animals" with, for example, "animals in the laboratory."

Address Manuscripts to Editor:

All manuscripts should be in English; the editors will provide help to authors
whose first language is other than English. Because of the international and multidisciplinary source of manuscripts, authors are encouraged to avoid jargon. Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001) obtainable from APA, Book Order Department, P.O. Box 92984, Washington, DC 20090-2984, or http://www.apa.org/ books/pubman.

Send manuscripts, books for review, and other correspondence as an email attachment, preferably in Word, to Kenneth J. Shapiro, PhD, at ken.shapiro@animalsandsociety.org. An abbreviated style and formatting sheet is available from Dr. Shapiro.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Manuscript pages should be consecutively numbered throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 180 words. The abstract should avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text.

Blind Review:

To facilitate anonymous review, only the article title should appear on the first page of the manuscript. An attached cover page must contain the title, authorship, and an introductory footnote with professional titles
and mailing addresses of the authors and any statements of credit or research support. Every effort should be made by the authors to see that the manuscript itself contains no clues to their identities. The editors will assign manuscripts to the relevant content area editor. All manuscripts will be scrutinized by at least two referees.

References.

Cite in the text by author and date (Smith, 1983). Prepare reference list in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 5th ed. Examples:

Illustrations:

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on a journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures:

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short, descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures
should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs and Reprints:

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
