Instructions for Authors

Editorial Scope: The Journal of Public Relations Research publishes scholarship that creates, tests, or expands public relations theory. Manuscripts may examine why organizations practice public relations as they do and how public relations can be conducted more effectively; analysis of the publics of public relations; scholarly criticism of public relations practice; and development of the history, ethics, or philosophy of public relations. Because of the wide range of influences on and effects of public relations, interdisciplinary research is particularly encouraged. Two kinds of articles can be submitted: reviews of major programs of research (20-60 double-spaced manuscript pages) and reports of original research (approximately 20 double-spaced manuscript pages). All methodologies are appropriate, including critical, historical, legal, philosophical, and social scientific. The Journal is produced for the Public Relations Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in cooperation with public relations educators in the International Communication Association, National Communication Association, Public Relations Society of American, and International Association of Business Communicators.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines: The Journal has changed its submission process and is now only accepting electronically submitted manuscripts via Manuscript Central. Please register and submit at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/HPRR. Please direct all queries to Editor-elect Karen Russell at JPRR@grady.uga.edu.

The format for submissions should be the following:
1) Attachment 1 should include two pages: a) The first page is a cover letter that states that the findings reported in the manuscript are original, contribute to the broad body of knowledge in public relations, and have not been published previously. Authors should also state that they have complied with American Psychological Association ethical standards in the treatment of their samples. b) The second page should have the manuscript title, institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), and author contact details (including full postal addresses).

2) Attachment 2 should have an abstract and the manuscript text including references. To allow for anonymous refereeing, do not include any text in this document (including in its headers, footers and references) that would indicate the manuscript's authorship. As well as removing author identity from the text within the document, please remove any identifying information automatically recorded in the document's properties. To see if Microsoft Word is recording name, pull down the ‘‘File'' menu, click on ‘‘Properties,'' and select the ‘‘Summary'' tab. Remove any identifying information and then save the file.

Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Type all components of the manuscript double spaced, including title page, abstract, text, quotes, acknowledgments, references, appendices, tables, figure captions, and footnotes. The abstract should be no more than 100 words that can be understood by public relations practitioners and scholars not familiar with the theory and method of the article.

Audience: Public relations scholars, students, and practitioners, as well as students and professionals in allied communication and mass communication disciplines. Permissions: Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to reprint or adapt a table or figure or to reprint a quotation of 500 words or more. Authors should write to original author(s) and publisher to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages to use the material in the article and in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines obtained.

Color Reproduction. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for printþonline reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if printþonline reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print+Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.

Tables and Figures. Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.
