Instructions for Authors

Instructions to Authors

Maritime Affairs solicits well researched papers on aspects related to the maritime world. Papers submitted to the journal should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the paper is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be, published elsewhere, the authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission. By submitting a manuscript, the author(s) agree that the copyright for their paper is transferred to the National Maritime Foundation, if and when the paper is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and transactions.

Though there is no standard length for papers, 5000-8000 words is a useful target. The paper should begin with an indented summary of around 100-150 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the paper. Details of institutional affiliations of the author(s), full address(es) and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the cover sheet as should a note of the exact length of the paper.

Each typescript should be submitted in duplicate. Papers should be typewritten on A4/letter size paper, on one side only, double-spaced (including notes) and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively. Papers should be submitted on CD-R in rich text format (RTF) or MS Word together with double-spaced hard copy.

All diagrams and maps should be provided separately in uncompressed .TIF or .JPG formats in individual files. These should be prepared in black and white. Tints should be avoided. If maps and diagrams cannot be prepared electronically, they should be presented on good quality white paper. Each CD-R should be labelled with the journal's name, paper title, name of the author(s) and software used. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that where copyright materials are included within a paper, the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included on a separate sheet to be submitted with the paper. Copyright of papers published in Maritime Affairs rests with the National Maritime Foundation.

Style

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The Editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. A guide to style and presentation is obtainable from the publisher. Current Journal style should be followed closely. Dates should be given in the form: January 1, 2000. Use Figures for denoting numbers 11 and above. British spellings are to be used. Sub-headings and sub-sub-headings should be unambiguously marked on the copy.

Title

The title of the paper should clearly convey its aim.

Abstract

This is an indented summary of around 100-150 words describing the objective, main arguments and conclusions of the paper.

Article text

All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figure and should be consecutively numbered. Source tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text.

Source Notes

Maritime Affairs follows a system of endnotes for references in the Chicago style of citation. The notes should be single spaced and numbered consecutively through the paper. They should follow the following pattern:
