Instructions for Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Address manuscripts to BJC McKercher, Editor-in-Chief, Department of History, Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario K7K 7B4, Canada. Phone: +1-613.541.6000 X 6007, Fax: +1-613.541.6056. E-mail: mckercher-b@rmc.ca

Each manuscript should be submitted in duplicate. Upon acceptance authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on disk. The manuscript can be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors' names, file name, and software program. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 250 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.

Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the cover sheet as should a note of the exact length of the article.

Notes

Notes should be numbered consecutively through the article with a raised numeral corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end.

(a) References to books should give the author's name, title of the book (italic), and the place of publication and date of publication in brackets, e.g. Victor Rothwell, Britain and the Cold War, 1941-7 (London: Jonathan Cape, 1982), p.408. Repeated references to the same book may, after the first reference, be indicated by the author's surname and shortened title, e.g. Rothwell, Britain and the Cold War, p.408.
(b) Reference to articles in periodicals should give the author's name, the title of the article in single quotation marks, the title of the periodical (italic), the number of the volume, and the year of publication in brackets, e.g. John Baylis, ‘Britain and the Dunkirk Treaty: The Origins of NATO,' Journal of Strategic Studies, 5/2 (1982), pp. 236–48. Subsequent references:
Baylis, ‘Britain and the Dunkirk Treaty,' p.237.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints

Each corresponding author will receive 25 reprints of their article upon registration with Rightslink, our authorized reprint provider. Authors will need to create a unique account and register with Rightslink for this free service. The link is provided at the time of page proof review.  Complimentary reprints are not available post publication. Each corresponding author will also receive one complimentary copy of the issue in which their article appears.
