Instructions for Authors

Objectives and Scope:   The countries of South Asia - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - are internally diverse and part of global flows of people, goods and ideas. Contemporary South Asia seeks to address the issues of the region by presenting research and analysis which is both cross-regional and multi-disciplinary. The journal encourages the development of new perspectives on the study of South Asia from across the arts and social sciences disciplines. We also welcome contributions to pan-regional and inter-disciplinary analysis. Our aim is to create a vibrant research space to explore the multidimensional issues of concern to scholars working on South Asia and the South Asian diasporas in the postcolonial era.

Submission:
The Editors welcome submission of material for consideration as a main article, review article, or research note. Main articles should be broadly consistent with the Objectives and Scope above and be approximately 5000-7000 words in length. Review articles and research notes should be in the range of 1500-3000 words. Manuscripts should be written in English and submitted electronically via Contemporary South Asia's Manuscript Central site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ccsa.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text including the manuscript title, institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), the word count of the manuscript (including references), an abstract (200 words), up to five keywords that reflect the manuscript's content, author contact details (including email and full postal addresses), and, in the case of jointly-authored work, the name of the corresponding author who will check proofs and receive offprints.  When uploading their files, authors should define this non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

The second version of the manuscript should have all information identifying the author removed to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees. This file should be defined as “Main Document.”  If tables and/or figures form part of the manuscript, these should be attached as separate, additional files (see below).

Presentation: Manuscripts should be typed in journal style, double spaced (including footnotes and references) with wide margins.  Manuscripts must be arranged in the following order of presentation. First sheet: title; subtitle (if any); author's name, affiliation and postal and email addresses of co-authors should be clearly indicated. Subsequent sheets: main body of text; list of references and footnotes; appendices; tables (on separate sheets); captions to illustrations (on a separate sheet); illustrations. The text should be organized under appropriate section headings.

Book Reviews: Contemporary South Asia carries a substantial number of book reviews in each issue. We review books on all aspects related to the study of South Asia. We also carry occasional reviews of films and literary works related to the region. Single volume reviews are normally about 600 words, joint reviews about 1000 words. We are always delighted to hear from potential reviewers. Please take a look at the downloadable list of books currently available for review by clicking here. If you are interested in reviewing any of the titles listed or would like to know more about reviewing for Contemporary South Asia, please contact the Reviews Editor Edward Simpson (es7@soas.ac.uk).
