Instructions for Authors

The Journal of Continuing Higher Education strives to support continuing higher education by serving as a forum for the reporting and exchange of information based on research, observations, and the experience relevant to the field. Issues are published in the winter, spring, and fall. Manuscripts (four copies) should be submitted to Editor Barbara Hanniford at:

Barbara Hanniford, Editor, The Journal of Continuing Higher Education, Division of Continuing Education Cleveland State University 2121 Euclid Avenue CE 103 Cleveland, OH 44115-2214 Phone: (216) 687-2149 Fax: (216) 687-5299 E-mail: b.hanniford@csuohio.edu

We encourage the following types of submissions:
  • Major articles - current research, theoretical models, conceptual treatments - of up to 7,000 words on:
  • organization and administration of continuing higher education
  • development and application of new continuing education program thrusts
  • adult and nontraditional students
  • continuing education student programs and services
  • research within continuing higher education and related fields
Manuscripts should have both theoretical and practical implications.
  • “Best Practices” articles of up to 4,000 words. These “Best Practice” articles contain descriptions of new, innovative, and successful programs or practices. The programs or practices should be replicable and of significance to the profession.
  • Book reviews of current publications in the field - prospective authors are advised to consult with the editor prior to preparing book reviews.
  • Opinion pieces of up to 2,000 words addressing issues directly relevant to continuing higher education.

All manuscripts should be typewritten and double-spaced. Please submit four copies with all authors' names, titles, institutional affiliations, mailing and email addresses, fax numbers, and telephone numbers on a separate sheet of paper. Please indicate if the manuscript is to be considered as a major article, “Best Practices” article, or opinion piece. The author's name should not appear on the manuscript itself. Manuscripts may also be submitted electronically. For electronic submissions, the author information should be in a separate electronic file. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition should be used to provide stylistic guidance, including reference citations and formatting. Major and “Best Practice” articles should include an abstract of 50–150 words.

We acknowledge receipt of each manuscript. The Journal of Continuing Higher Education uses a blind review process for evaluation of major article and “Best Practice” manuscripts, with manuscripts read by three reviewers. We make every effort to notify authors of the outcome of the manuscript review within 60 days of receipt.
If a manuscript is accepted for publication, we ask the author to provide the final version electronically. We reserve the right to edit the manuscript without notice to the author so that it conforms to style, usage, and space requirements.
Please note: Manuscript submission indicates that the piece is not under consideration for publication elsewhere and has not been published previously. If the manuscript is accepted, authors must sign a transfer of copyright agreement.

Illustrations.
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, half tones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color Illustrations.
Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color.

Tables and Figures.
Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.

Proofs.
Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints and Issues.
Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication. Each corresponding author will receive 3 complete issues in which the article publishes and a complimentary PDF. This file is for personal use only and may not be copied and disseminated in any form without prior written permission from Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
